North Korea reported that they have successfully detonated a Hydrogen bomb capable of being loaded onto an intercontinental ballistic missile. While Japanese officials are still working to confirm that the explosion was in fact the test of an H-bomb, the assertion is still concerning to Japanese and American governments in the midst of mounting concern over North Korea possessing nuclear weapons. Prime Minister Abe said that he is working with President Trump to address the situation.

American Vice President Pence met with Japanese Deputy Prime Minister Aso to discuss new bilateral trade agreements between the two countries. The talks came after delays due to lack of personnel in the Trump Administration and tensions on the Korean Peninsula. So-called "working groups" will discuss trade relating to automobiles and agriculture in order to reduce the US trade deficit with Japan.
